Family Photo Session in Loudoun County, VA

I love photographing families year after year. I love seeing how kids change and grow. I can’t believe how much these two boys have grown since their last photo session! I’m always happy to capture this wonderful family in portraits, but I was especially glad that we could preserve little brother’s no-front-teeth stage! Priceless.

This photo shoot was last fall. Umm. Yes. I’m still catching up! We got right down to business with no silly stuff! Ok, scratch that. We actually had a fun goofy time and got some beautiful family photos at the same time.

Family Portraits in South Riding VA

It’s been too long since we had photos of us all together. Our oldest is a senior and we want to capture the way things are right now.

These were a couple of the reasons my friend Trisha messaged me about shooting their family portraits. This was at the end of my fall session season. We had to do some squeezing in and fall foliage was not abundant. But we found a date and a pretty spot and made it happen. Honestly I would have moved mountains to make it happen. Not just because it’s fun to photograph friends. But I am just so proud of Trisha for making this a priority. She was speaking right to the core of why I do this.

If you know me, you know I’m passionate about family photography. The landscape of family life changes so fast. And yes, just like many moms, I put off getting images of the whole family. It’s not always convenient. Since I’m always taking pictures it’s just easier to grab photos of my daughter and husband. But I believe it’s worth the effort!

I’ve said it before. And at the risk of nagging, listen up, Moms (including me). Get in there with your kids. It’s not a family photo if you’re not in it!

We captured some photos of the whole family as well as some of just the kids (what mom doesn’t want that?) and shared a lot of laughs.

Chris the Conqueror

Chris is a bright and happy seven year old. He loves Legos, Star Wars, baseball, and playing with his friends, just like lots of other little boys. But unlike most boys, his life went from typical to extraordinarily difficult last August when doctors found a five centimeter mass on his right kidney. Chris had Wilms Tumor (nephroblastoma), a type of kidney cancer that affects young children.

The first step of Chris’ treatment was surgery to remove the tumor. Unfortunately, there were unexpected complications that led to two more surgeries. Next came radiation which was completed last September, followed by twenty-eight rounds of chemotherapy. Chris is very close to completing the chemo. Way to go, Chris! You are almost there!

I was extremely fortunate to meet this sweet, tough kid, his parents and his adorable little sister and photograph them in a Shoots for a Cure photo session. They have all endured more these last seven months than any family, any child should have to. I feel blessed that I could do this small thing for them.

Chris has this Facebook page chronicling his progress. It’s a great resource for you to offer him encouragement and find out how you can pray for him and his family. Best of all it will be a great place to celebrate with them as Chris finishes treatment and kicks cancer’s butt!

Family Photo Session ~ Chantilly VA

Thank you for your patience while I catch up posting some of my fall photo sessions! This is another one of my favorites from last fall. I know the Bargen family from our time together at AWANAs in Centreville and I consider them very dear friends.

This was our second fall photo session together and I was very excited to work with them again and meet the newest member of the family! What a precious baby girl!

We met up at a park in Chantilly, VA. The day was just warm enough and we were blessed with some beautiful light. Perfect day to be outside and capture some beautiful photos!

Family Portraits ~ Burke Lake Park

I love watching (and documenting!) babies as they grow! I was completely smitten with this smiley six month old when I photographed him last spring. So of course I was thrilled to photograph him and his beautiful family again just after he turned one. I don’t know how that happened so fast! But I can tell you this little guy was busy during those six months. Getting taller. Sprouting teeth. Even his personality, which was substantial six months ago, grew. He is even more smiley and playful now! I had fun trying to keep up!

Fred~Semper Fortis

Fred was diagnosed with bladder cancer in April of 2012. He was treated with surgery in July followed by chemotherapy. I was honored to photograph his Shoots for a Cure session just before he finished his chemotherapy in early November.

Fred has extensively chronicled his experience and shares what he’s learned along the way. In excerpt:

“I am both humbled and grateful to have the opportunity to share my cancer story with you.

For the last several years I have been journaling, mostly to myself and my family. When I was diagnosed with cancer, I began writing about the experience. After surgery, I began reflecting on the total experience and decided to think about the lessons learned. I gave it a name, “Semper Fortis”. Semper means always and Fortis means strong hence, “Always Strong”. The name is a nod to the Marine Corps and to my daughter Caity who is in her fifth year of Latin. Truthfully as a cancer survivor now, I am learning it helps if you are always strong — Physically, Mentally and Spiritually.

Cancer is not completely foreign to us. My wife Kim is a fourteen year breast cancer survivor. It seems like such ago long time ago, that we had our world shaken to the core the first time. Our youngest daughter was ten months old at the time. I watched Kim, battle this disease with style, grace and strength. She is a lot tougher than she looks and way tougher than me. In any case, no one wants to be told they have cancer. For reasons that we may never know, our family has been shaken to the core again with my diagnosis.

There are many things to write about with this experience. However, I think there are a few lessons that are worth sharing. These were all learned during my diagnosis. They are probably pretty good life lessons as well.

Today I stand as a cancer survivor to share with you five lessons I have learned. “I am a son, brother, husband, father, friend, former U.S. Marine and now a proud cancer survivor.”

Lesson Four — Determine what is Important and Set Priorities
